After a year in the Doldrums the men's 1s are once again where they belong, the ULU Cup Final. Through some serious administrative error, which places OCs up with the top pitches in London, we have the home advantage for the final. Looking to avenge our defeat of 2007 we'll be playing George's. The date for your diaries, should you wish to lend your support, is Sunday 1st of March. Time tbc, but I'm sure Ted will be making one of his Sunday delicacies, Chicken hotpot or tuna and sweetcorn pasta.
Route to the final:
Quarter Final vs Royal Holloway - 3-1 win
They turned up with a squad of 16 and a coach, we had a solid 11. They proceeded to run through more high intensity drills in their hour long warm than we do at training. As it was really very cold we stayed in the changing room until 15 minutes before the game. Having been thoroughly lulled into a false sense of security and looking rather tired after their pre-match routine, we hoped to capitalise from the off. 30 minutes later however, they'd had most of the possession, around 70%, and most of the territory, we didn't leave our 25, and it was quite clear that they were neither lulled nor tired. However, we went into half time 1-0 up, I don't remember how we scored, it just happened. The second half was a different story, you might call it a game of two halves: Sue (of Pete and Sue fame) sent two of their players off - we scored two goals against 9; they came back on, scored one with 11. The final whistle went, they got very angry and stormed off. Quarter final done.
Semi Final vs Imperial - 4-4 (after E.T) 4-2 win on flicks
I can actually remember this game so you can have some more details: They scored, we scored, we scored, they scored, we scored, we scored, they scored, (I got hit in the nads and cried, Ally broke his thumb in half, we effectively had no sub and went down to 10) they scored. One for the fans really. 4-4 stunner with their equaliser coming in the last minute.
Extra Time: Pete (of Pete and Sue fame) sent one of them off, Imperial down to 10. Some end to end stuff, Imperial back up to 11 again. A couple of minutes later Pete sends their number 14 off, Imperial down to 10 again. In short we had the upper hand but didn't score.
Flicks: Doddy fluff and miss, imperial goal. 0-1; Peeping 'Iceman' Tom slots one bottom right, imperial goal. 1-2; Colesy mid right, never in doubt, Vijay flying dive to the right and save. 2-2; B.Lad (having never scored a flick in competitive competition) steps up - roofed top left, Imperial sky one. 3-2; George Foxall looking to avenge last year's semi final exit to Imperial, maintains his 100% record by squeezing one past their stationary keeper. Final score 4-2.
We can promise just as much drama in the final, you won't be disappointed.
